Ms. Sequino - ELA

Welcome to English Language Arts!Notepad.png

English Language Arts provides students with the opportunity to develop critical-thinking skills as they read and analyze literature. This year, students will study literature through the novel and nonfiction articles and strengthen their writing through vocabulary and grammar lessons. Over the course of the year, students will develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills through project-based activities. In particular, the following grades will be studying units and activities as described below:

6th Grade ELA: We will be working out of Pearson’s Common Core textbook, but students will also read selected folktales from the Brothers’ Grimm. They will also read Greek myths before embarking on the classic novel, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis. Students will again engage in a vigorous study of vocabulary and grammar from supplemental materials, and apply these skills to various writing projects.

7th Grade ELA: To begin the school year, students will read short stories by Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, and others to explore the elements of dystopian literature. We will then read Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, as well as nonfiction articles related to the novel, and will work on various projects pertaining to those readings. Also on the agenda are short stories by O. Henry, a dramatic version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and personal narrative and expository writing.

8th Grade ELA: We will begin the fall with a vigorous study of grammar and punctuation rules in preparation for the Catholic High School Entrance Exam on October 27th. In addition, students will study the poetry of Robert Frost, Stephen Crane, Emily Dickinson, and others, and apply their understanding of figurative language by composing their own poetry; study literature through various short stories from Pearson’s Common Core textbook, as well as S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders; and write extensively through essays, journal writes, and assignments.
